Late evening light filtered through the mist of this early winter's day casting red hues through the clouds and onto the yellow willow, and the leaves, rocks and gentle waves of the shoreline. The tree is anchored in the right third of the picture but leans left and reaches out beautiful delicate shoots of branches. Rita Angus, a profound New Zealand painter, centred a single tree with similar qualities in a painting I have always loved for its singularity and simplicity.
