A meandering 'S' starting from the top third on the left side and running as the ridge from Mt Tasman toward Aoraki/Mt Cook in the bottom third on the right hand side gives the photo its compositional key. A classic polarity of shadow and light also divides along the ridge to heighten the effect. The dark side (including the Balfour Face on Mt Tasman) seems so foreboding; the light side so welcoming, including the next 'S' key of the Tasman Glacier leading into the 'thousand mountains shining' of the Southern Alps in the background.
