Margaret Silverwood was born in South Australia in 1966, migrated to Dunedin, New Zealand in 1981, and is now based in Whanganui. She has written and illustrated three children's picture books under the name Margaret Shannon, which have been published in Australia, New Zealand, the U.S.A., Great Britain and Korea. After graduating with distinction in 2004 as a Bachelor of Fine Arts printmaking major from the Quay School of the Arts, Whanganui UCOL, Margaret has exhibited widely throughout New Zealand. She has also exhibited in group shows in Australia and the United States, and participated in an international print exchange originating from Monash University, Melbourne. Margaret has self-published two mini-comics, winning the Art award in the New Zealand Comic Awards 2010 for Utopia Now: Vol. 1, and has taught an elective in Comics and Graphic Storytelling at Whanganui UCOL for the BFA programme.
Margaret Silverwood's printmaking and drawing reflects her interest in human beings' troubled relationship with the rest of nature, our colonial past, the relationship of Europeans to Pacific cultures, and the pitfalls of modern living.
