My mother gave me a love of flowers. She studied Ikebana – a form of Japanese flower arrangement and our house was often full of flowers. I would photograph them, fascinated by their colour and exquisite form and structure. One day I saw a series of photos by the great fashion photographer Irving Penn, of some dying flowers and I’m sure that gave me the impulse to do this series. I slightly underexposed the images.
